Will the Real Sankaracharya please stand up?

It was a bit strange to hear the reaction of Sri Swaroopanand Saraswati, the Dwarka Sankaracharya, to Kanchi Swami's arrest.

First he insisted that Jayendra Swamigal "must step down ... If a public representative or a minister was required to quit his post for alleged complicity in a criminal or murder case [umm..when did this ever happen?], then why not Shankaracharya also quit his post?"

It's a bit absurd to ask a sanyasi to "quit", don't you think? When someone has already quit everything - home, family, companionship, earnings, comforts - all the things we take for granted in our day-to-day life, what else can He possibly "quit"? Last I heard, this isn't a "post" you "apply" for. But then, maybe things are different at Dwarkapeeth?

What he said next really confused me... he said first it had to be understood who was "the real Sankaracharya."

Now, I am only a lowly bhakth - maybe these things are just beyond my ken. Still, it's hard for me to figure out how any true disciple of Adi Sankara's Advaita, would be so obsessed to prove himself the "real" Sankaracharya over others...

It's no accident that the words "sant" and "sanity" have the same root. It isn't the fake swamis who worry me; it's the ones who don't make sense!

Shivo'ham!
